Measure for Your Custom Rocking Chair

How to Measure for a Custom-Fit Rocking Chair

Ten simple body measurements. About ten minutes. A rocking chair built to fit you for the rest of your life.

Every Authentic Rocker by John is engineered from your own body measurements. Seat height, seat depth, armrest position, lumbar support height, backrest curvature, and rocker radius are all calculated from the dimensions you submit below — so the chair fits you the moment you sit in it, and stays comfortable for hours.

You don’t need to visit the workshop. Most customers complete this guide at home with a tape measure, a yardstick, and a helper. Many are out of state. The interactive guide below walks you through each measurement with a photo, a clear instruction, and a tip — one step at a time. Your progress saves automatically, so you can pause and come back later.

What You’ll Need

  • A tape measure (cloth or retractable)
  • A yardstick (helpful for a couple of measurements)
  • A hard, flat chair — a dining chair works well
  • A flat board or hardcover book if your chair seat is contoured and for the knee-to-back measurement
  • A helper for two or three of the measurements
  • About ten minutes

What Happens After You Submit

Your measurements arrive in the shop the same minute you submit them. Within 24 to 48 hours I’ll review them, generate your fitting report, and reach out by email to confirm your wood species, finish, and options. A 50% deposit reserves your build slot — the rest is due at completion. Current wait list is approximately 14 weeks; construction and finishing take up to another 12 weeks. Plan on about 24-26 weeks total from order to completion. See the Custom Rockers page for full details on wood choices, finishes, pricing, and the construction process.

What’s a fitting report?

Every measurement you provide is translated into a personalized fitting report — a multi-view engineering drawing of a rocker for you, with every dimension derived from your numbers. Seat height, rocker radius, armrest position, overall width — all calculated specifically to fit you.
