John White — Woodworking by John LLC, Lexington, South Carolina

I’m John White, and for over 30 years I’ve combined my training as a Mechanical Engineer with a deep love of woodworking. That unique combination allows me to create furniture that’s not just beautiful—it’s engineered for comfort and built to last for generations.

From my workshop in Lexington, South Carolina, I craft custom-fit rocking chairs, artistic wood turnings, and restore cherished antique furniture. Every piece receives the same meticulous attention to detail that the old masters practiced, enhanced by modern engineering precision.

Why I Work With Wood

My grandfather was a farmer, machinist, and woodworker. I became an engineer and a woodworker, too. It looks like my daughter will carry it forward after me.

Each Authentic Rocker is built in that tradition — by hand, to last for generations, and for one person at a time.

Measured. Made. Meant for You.

My Signature: Custom-Fit Rocking Chairs

While I create many types of fine woodwork, my Custom-Fit Rocking Chairs have become my signature specialty. This is where my engineering background truly shines.

Most rocking chairs are built for an “average” person who doesn’t exist. Every rocker I build is different—precisely calculated and constructed to match YOUR unique body dimensions:

  • Seat height and depth matched to your leg length
  • Back angle engineered for your torso
  • Armrest height, length, and taper positioned for your natural arm position
  • Rocker curve calculated for comfortable, smooth motion
  • Back slats made to match your upper and lower back curves and optimized for flexible back support
  • Seat slats contoured to provide a natural, comfortable seat

The “Authentic Rocker by John” Signature

Every rocker I build is signed underneath the seat:

“An Authentic Rocker by John
Made for [Customer Name]
[Date]
Lexington, South Carolina “

This signature transforms each piece from furniture into a documented heirloom—a chair built specifically for you, with your name permanently part of its story.

The Journey: From Engineering to Woodworking

My fascination with how things work began early. Growing up, I was always taking things apart—and sometimes successfully putting them back together. That natural curiosity led me to study Mechanical Engineering, where I learned to see the world through the lens of forces, angles, and structural integrity.

As an engineer, I spent years designing systems that had to work perfectly under stress—thinking about load distribution, material properties, and how components interact over time. These same principles now inform every piece I build:

  • Load Distribution — How weight transfers through a chair’s joints
  • Material Selection — Understanding wood properties and grain orientation
  • Structural Integrity — Designing joints that strengthen over time
  • Ergonomics — Creating furniture that works WITH the human body

Beyond Rockers: A Full Spectrum of Woodwork

Wood Turning & Artistic Work

On the lathe, I create pieces that celebrate wood’s natural beauty—artistic vases and hollow forms, precisely fitted boxes and containers, bowls and vessels from delicate to bold, and decorative pieces enhanced with hand carving and texturing. Many turned pieces are truly one-of-a-kind creations that can never be exactly duplicated.

Furniture Restoration

There’s something deeply satisfying about bringing an antique piece back to life. When someone entrusts me with a family heirloom, I approach it with reverence. My engineering background is invaluable here—understanding how the original craftsman built the piece is essential to restoring it properly.

The Philosophy Behind the Work

Quality Over Quantity

I don’t mass-produce. Each project receives my full attention from design through final finish. I take on a limited number of projects at a time to ensure every piece gets the care it deserves.

Traditional Methods, Modern Precision

I use time-tested joinery—mortise and tenon joints, dovetails, proper wood movement accommodation—enhanced with engineering knowledge and precision tools.

The Human Touch

Every piece shows evidence of the hand that made it. I intentionally preserve subtle marks of the making process—not flaws, but reminders that a human craftsperson carefully shaped each element.

“The work I do allows me to combine precision engineering with artistic expression. Every piece—whether a custom rocker engineered to fit someone perfectly or a delicate hollow form turned from figured wood—represents this marriage of head and heart, calculation and intuition.”
